Biography

Belgium royalty, the King of Belgium in 1934 after the death of his father, King Albert. In the '40s he lost his popularity due to surrendering to the Germans and he remained a prisoner in Belgium. When he abdicated after the war, in 1951, his eldest son Baudouin took over the throne.

He married Astrid of Sweden in a civil service on 4 November 1926 and a religious service on 10 November 1926, and was widowed with her death in an auto accident on 29 August 1935.

He was remarried, to Liliane in a religious service on 11 September 1941 and a civil service on 6 December 1941.

King Leopold died on 25 September 1983 after coronary bypass surgery, Brussels, Belgium.
