The discovery of the invisible planets in the solar system came with the advent of telescopes, expanding our view and understanding of the solar system and the universe. The newly discovered planets added a completely new layer to our chart analysis, and a greater focus on identifying the evolution of consciousness. How does one think of cooking with Saturn? Saturn food would be that which sustains and nourishes, does the job so to speak, without any fuss and bother, without any lavish extras or expensive outlay. Saturn is traditional and represents the past, family traditions and parental controls.
If you are an astrologer who regularly reads charts, you will almost certainly have found that people seek you out around their Saturn Return, when they are 27-30 years old. Similarly, many people will consult an astrologer near their Chiron Return, which occurs at age 49-52, closing the longest planetary cycle of our life thus far.
After its discovery in 1846, astrologers debated the possible meanings of Neptune in horoscopes, and over time eventually settled onto a few basic qualities, which included such keywords as spiritual, nebulous, illusions, sensitivity etc. But there is one aspect of its influence that’s been too often overlooked by astrologers. What is that, exactly? In a word, obligation.
Every 36 years, Saturn and Neptune come back together. As they swim the Piscean depths today, we find them at the end of their last 36-year cycle and the beginning of a new one in 2026. In speaking with astrologers, whenever the subject of Saturn and Neptune comes up, there is an ominous overtone of dread. But is there an upside to their fearsome associations with lack and loss?
No planetary cycle is all good or all bad, since each and every one is inevitably a mixture of both. That’s especially true in the case of a planet like Pluto, which embodies such dramatic extremes in its essential nature. What’s been happening in America these last few years could be seen as a massive Plutonian power struggle. But there are also Pluto’s more constructive and transformative potentials, which allow us to see these struggles in a much broader context.
The following article was first presented in 1986 as a lecture for the Institute for the Study of Consciousness in Berkeley, and then in a longer plenary address given to the First International Cycles and Symbols Conference, a gathering of psychologists and astrologers held in San Francisco in 1990. We believe it represents a particularly succinct statement about astrology’s broader implications in ways that continue to hold relevance for our times—perhaps even more today than thirty years ago. For that reason, we felt it was worth bringing to the public’s attention again.
