Biography
Austrian field-marshal (name Anglicised as Charles), the third son of emperor Leopold II and his wife Infanta Maria Luisa of Spain. He was also the younger brother of Francis II, Holy Roman Emperor. Despite being epileptic, Karl achieved respect both as a commander and as a reformer of the Austrian army. He was considered one of Napoleon's most formidable opponents. He married Princess Henrietta of Nassau-Weilburg (1797–1829) and they had seven children. Karl died at Vienna on 30 April 1847.

Originally this entry had 4 PM, with Sy Scholfield quoting from "Erzherzog Carl von Österreich: Geistigkeit und Religiosität zwischen Aufklärung und Revolution" by Winfried Romberg (Verlag der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften, 2006), p. 37: "Das Elternhaus Am 5. September 1771 um vier Uhr nachmittags ließ friedlicher Kanonendonner die Bevölkerung von Florenz aufhorchen, der Hauptstadt des Großherzogtums Toskana. Aus der Residenz Villa Poggio Imperiale verlautete, daß die Großherzogin „mit einem gesunden und wohlgestalteten Prinzen glücklich entbunden worden sei."
Translation: On September 5, 1771 at four o'clock in the afternoon there was peaceful thunder of a cannon, the population of Florence sat up, in the capital of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. From the residence Villa Poggio Imperiale was reported that the Grand Duchess "had been safely delivered of a healthy and well-formed Prince."
On 15 April 2017 Scholfield changed the birth time to 2:30 PM, having forwarded a more detailed news report from "'s Hertogenbossche courant," 20 September 1771, p. 1: "Florence den 6 September. Gifter tusfchen 2 en 3 uuren naar den middag is onze Doorl. Groot Hertogin, tot groote Vreugde van 't Hof en alle de Onderdanen, gelukkig van eenen Prins verloft. De Doop wierd aan den Jonggeborene bediend des avonds ten 8 uuren, dezelve is genoemt Carel, Lodewyk, Johan, Joseph, Laurens."
(Florence, 6 September. Yesterday between 2 and 3 o'clock in the afternoon, the Grand Duchess, to the great joy of all citizens, was happily delivered of a Prince. At 8 o'clock in the evening, he was baptised with the names Karl Ludwig Johann Josef Lorenz).
