Biography

Italian model and cover girl; from a wealthy family, she left college and started her career modeling for GUESS?, Inc. Carla Bruni was born to the jet-setter lifestyle. She moved to Paris at age five, but spent much of her childhood in Switzerland at boarding school. She returned to study arts and architecture at the University of Paris. While at the university, her brother's girlfriend suggested she should try modeling and at the age of 19 she dropped out of school and signed with City Models in Paris.

That same year, the president of GUESS?, Inc., saw her face in a stack of model photos and knew that she would be a star. Bruni appeared with Estelle Hallyday in a GUESS? Advertising campaign shot in Paris and in another shot in Spain. Since then, Bruni has appeared on numerous magazine covers, including American and foreign editions of Elle and Glamour, as well as on the catwalks of high-fashion designers such as Christian Dior, Paco Rabanne, Chanel, Givenchy and Yves Saint Laurent.

Bruni has a sister named Valeria who is an actress and a brother named Virginio. She enjoys playing guitar and spending time with her Siamese cats named Mitzy and Betty. One of her closest friends is fellow GUESS? Model, Karen Mulder. Bruni is also the heiress to an Italian tire manufacturing fortune.

Her name has been linked romantically with Eric Clapton, Mick Jagger and Donald Trump. In May 1993, she was dating French actor Vincent Perez. On 21 July 2001 she gave birth to her first child, Aurélien, the son of Raphaël Enthoven.

Carla has terminated her modeling career (probably due to age) and beautifully started a new one as a singer. In 2002, she has put out a record which is a gem, surprising all critics with the quality of her songs. She wrote the texts, composed the music, and has a unique broken voice. The style is not mainstream commercial as it sounds more like more traditional French singers like Brel or Barbara. On November 14, 2007 she met Frances' President, Nicholas Sarkosy, who had been divorced the prior month from his second wife. They seemed to click right away and became a news item. According to the Washington Post and other news outlets, the supermodel-singer married France’s President Nicholas Sarkosy on February 2, 2008 at the Elysée palace. The Guardian reported that the ceremony began at 11 AM local time in Paris. The couple met at a party in November 14, 2007, about a month after Sarkozy’s October divorce from his second wife. Earlier unconfirmed reports (e.g., in the Telegraph) gave January 16, 2008 as the date of a secret marriage.

She gave birth to the daughter Giulia on October 19, 2011 at 19:16 (7:16 pm) in Paris, France (data from Didier Geslain, birth registry).
