Biography
Brazilian comedian, talk show host, author, theatrical producer, director, actor, painter and musician.
After being educated in Switzerland and United States, Soares returned to his birth city of Rio de Janeiro and worked at TV Rio in 1958, writing and performing in comedy shows for the station. In 1970, Soares started working at Rede Globo.
In 1988, Soares moved to SBT, where he hosted a talk-show, Jô Soares Onze e Meia ("Jô Soares Eleven Thirty"), until 1999. In 2000, Soares took his show's format (very similar to David Letterman's) back to Rede Globo, where it was then called Programa do Jô, and hosted the program until 2016.
His first novel O Xangô de Baker Street was written in 1995 and has already been published in several other countries; it was made into a film in 2000. He has put out various jazz CDs. He has also produced many plays including a version of Richard III.
Soares was overweight and married and divorced three times. He had one child, a son, Rafael Soares (1964–2014), who was on the autism spectrum.
Jô Soares died on 5 August 2022, aged 84, at Hospital Sírio-Libanês in the city of São Paulo, where he had been hospitalized since 28 July for pneumonia.

Marcello Borges quotes him on the news for 8:55 PM. Original entry was for Sao Paulo, which was corrected to Rio de Janeiro on 7 February 2018.
In August 2022 an email was received from Guilherme Henrique Salviano containing the link to a 2018 news article in which Soares is quoted as saying, "Jô trabalhava na peça 'A Noite de 16 de Janeiro', de Ayn Rand, que estreou em maio de 2018. O título chamou sua atenção por coincidir com sua data de nascimento. 'E eu nasci de noite mesmo, às 22h50. Sei porque minha mãe fazia, o que era muito comum naquela época, o livro do bebê'". [1]. [2].
(Translation: "Jô was working on the play "The Night of January 16th" by Ayn Rand, which premiered in May 2018. The title caught his attention because it coincided with his date of birth. "And I was born at night, at 10:50 PM. I know that because my mother kept a baby book, which was very common at that time").
