Biography

Swedish royalty, the son of Oscar I of the Bernadotte line and Josephine de Beauharnais. He acceded the throne as King of Sweden 1872-1907 and of Norway 1872-1905. On 6 June 1857, he married Sophia Wilhelmina Mariana and they had four kids, Gustav, 16 June 1858, who became King of Sweden; Oscar Charles Augustus, Count of Wisborg, 15 November 1859; Charles, Prince of Sweden, 27 February 1861; and Eugene Napoleon Nicholas, Duke of Narke, 1 August 1865. He died on 8 December 1907 in Stockholm.

Hasselgren (Fröléen, 1908), p. 7: "Onsdagen den 21 januari 1829 spreds på förmiddagen i den svenska hufvudstaden ett extrablad eller bihang till Post- och Inrikes Tidningar af följande, ordagrant återgifna lydelse: . »Hennes Kongl. Höghet Kronprinsessan blef, genom den Högste Gudens välsignelse, i natt tre qvart till 1 lyckligen förlöst med en Prins, som i det heliga Dopet kommer att undfå namn af OSCAR..."

Translation: On the morning of Wednesday, 21 January 1829 was spread across the Swedish metropolis an extra sheet or appendage to the Swedish Official Gazette, stating the following verbatim: "Her Royal Highness the Crown Princess through God's blessing was happily delivered in the night at a quarter before one of a Prince, who in holy baptism will receive the name of OSCAR..."
