The year is slowly coming to an end and this is the last Astrodienst newsletter in 2018. The upcoming holidays are also a welcome respite for us.

As always, the central celestial event in December is the winter solstice between the 21st and 22nd of the month. This is also the entrance of the Sun into the zodiac sign of Capricorn, as well as the shortest day of the year in the northern hemisphere.

The solstice - the rebirth of light - has been an important event since ancient times and has always been celebrated extensively. At the time of the Julian calendar, the solstice was on December 25th, and it is probably no coincidence that the Christian Christmas Day was later placed on this date.
