Biography

American ecclesiastic; on November 13, 2001, he became the first African-American elected President of The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. For the three years prior, beginning on November 17, 1998, he was Vice President of that organization. Ordained in 1973, he earned a doctorate in sacred liturgy in 1980 from the Pontifical Liturgical Institute in Rome. He became a bishop in 1983, serving for 10 years as auxiliary bishop under the late Cardinal Joseph Bernardin in Chicago. In 1994, he was installed as Bishop of Belleville, IL
