Biography
American conservative politician, lawyer, and scion of the Republican Party's Taft family. Taft represented Ohio in the United States Senate, briefly served as Senate Majority Leader, and was a leader of the conservative coalition of Republicans and conservative Democrats who prevented expansion of the New Deal. Often referred to as "Mr. Republican", he cosponsored the Taft–Hartley Act of 1947, which banned closed shops and other labor practices. He opposed the creation of NATO and criticized President Harry Truman's handling of the Korean War.
He was the elder son of William Howard Taft, the 27th President of the United States. Graduating from Harvard Law School and starting to work in 1913 at a law firm, his first public office was held from 1917 to 1919 as an assistant Councilman. He served as a Member of the House of Representatives (1921-1926) and the Ohio State Senate (1931-1932).
On 17 October 1914, he married Martha Wheaton Bowers (1889–1958). They had four sons: William Howard Taft III (1915–1991), who became ambassador to Ireland; Robert Alphonso Taft Jr. (1917–1993), who was also elected to the U.S. Senate; Lloyd Bowers Taft (1923–1985), who worked as an investment banker in Cincinnati, and Horace Dwight Taft (1925–1983), who became a professor of physics and dean at Yale.
Suffering from cancer Robert A. Taft died at New York Hospital on 31 July 1953 at age 63 following a brain hemorrhage.

Source Notes
AFA 2/1952 gives "shortly before 5:00 AM given by the family, "rectified to 4:44 AM by Ernest Grant."
(PC gives 5:00 PM CST from James Paterson "Mr. Republican," not confirmed. Former times included 1:21 AM LMT in AA 11/1951, no source.)
Added 29 June 2013: Wayne Turner has confirmed that the correct time should be PM rather than AM. The biography Mr. Republican by James Patterson quoted by Marc Penfield in his data collection states that Robert Taft was born "before five in the afternoon" on page 3. Professor Patterson emailed him 27 June 2013: "My source is a letter from Taft's father, William Howard Taft (later president of the US and still later Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court) to Alphonso (no last name, but almost certainly William Howard Taft's father, Alphonso Taft.) The letter is dated Sept. 10, 1889, and can be found in the papers of William Howard Taft, in the Library of Congress. In Series I, Box 28, of his papers."
The time of 4:45 pm is a guesswork approximation of the words "before five". Wayne also confirmed that the original reference to the AFA Bulletin of February 1952 should have been quoted as 4:44 pm LMT with an ascendant of Aquarius 12° and an MC of Sagittarius 1° based on Ernest Grant's rectification as stated in a discussion of the chart in the December 1953 AFAB on page 3. This discussion includes a note from Grant stating "...we are inclined to accept the time as previously published in the AFA Bulletin for it is based upon almost incontrovertible information from a 'member of the family'."
Sy Scholfield provided news article about Blanche O'Berg, Taft's personal secretary, "in the wink of an eye she can produce the hour of the day Sen. Taft was born [shortly before five o'clock in the afternoon]..." (Chicago Tribune, 8 July 1952, page 11).
