Biography
Korean royalty, the 23rd king of the Joseon Dynasty. He was born with the title of His Royal Highness Prince Yi Gong. Sunjo was the 2nd son of King Jeongjo and Lady Subin, one of his concubines. Sunjo died on 13 December 1834.

Sy Scholfield quotes his grandmother in "The Memoirs of Lady Hyegyŏng: The Autobiographical Writings of a Crown Princess of Eighteenth-century Korea" by Hyegyŏnggung Hong Ssi (University of California Press, 1996), p. 202: "With Heaven's silent assistance and the invisible benefactions of ancestors, on the eighteenth of the sixth month of the kyongsul year (1790), at three o'clock in the afternoon, the blessed event took place at a house facing my residence."
