Johann Friedrich Struensee

Biography

German-Danish physician, philosopher and statesman. He became a doctor for the poor in Altona at the age of 20. He made a name for himself with new, successful forms of therapy. In 1768 he accompanied the mentally ill Danish King Christian VII on his European tour. Within a short time, Struensee became the most powerful man in Denmark. His love affair with Queen Caroline Mathilde was a scandal at the time, especially after the birth of a daughter, Princess Louise Augusta, and is still the subject of novels and films today.

Through his numerous reforms, the Danish state became the most progressive of its time. But Struensee's rigorous austerity and personnel policies quickly made him enemies at court. He was overthrown and executed on 28 April 1772 at age 34 in Copenhagen. However, some of his reforms, such as freedom of the press, remained in place.
