Herman Alfred Schmid (Distinguished Flying Cross)

Biography

American brigadier general in the United States Air Force who served in World War II and the Korean War. During WWII, he flew 92 combat missions, mostly in P-47 Thunderbolts and P-38 Lightnings. He flew the F-86 Sabre jet fighter on 10 missions in the Korean War. Awards he received include the Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, the Distinguished Flying Cross, and the Air Medal with two oak leaf clusters. He died on 12 April 1985 at age 74.
