Source Notes
Sy Scholfield quotes from "Giovanni della Robbia" by Allan Marquand (Princeton University Press, 1920), p. xi: "Giovanni della Robbia was born on the nineteenth of May, 1469 at three o'clock in the morning, and was baptized on the following day. The baptismal records give him two names 'Giovanni et Antonio,' although he was known only by the former."
In May 2021, Hervé Delboy pointed out that the original birth record has been transcribed as follows: "Adi 20 di decto ( Maggio 1469 ) Giovanni et Antonio de Andrea di Giovanni popolo di San Lorenzo nacque adi 19 a hore 3 — ba “ addi 20 . ” [ Archivio dell ' Opera di S . Maria del Fiore] published in Luca Della Robbia, Volume 1, by Allan Marquand (Hacker Art Books, 1972). According to Florentine time this translates to 3 hours after sunset (7:45 PM), thus 10:45 PM, as calculated by Delboy.
