Biography
French swimmer who is the World and Olympic record holder in the long course 400 metre individual medley, the Olympic record holder in the 200 metre butterfly and the 200 metre breaststroke and the French record holder in the long course 200 metre individual medley, 200 metre butterfly and 200 metre breaststroke.
He is the son of swimmers Xavier Marchand and Céline Bonnet who competed formerly at the Olympic Games. Léon himself participated in the 400m medley at the 2020 Olympics.
In 2022, he won two gold medals and a silver medal at the world Aquatics championships. In 2023, he won the 400m medley for the second time, becoming the new world recordholder, succeeding Phelps, and won two other gold medals. His coach, Bob Bowman, was Phelps one.
At the 2024 Summer Olympics, he became Olympic Champion in the 200 m medley, 200 metre breaststroke, 200 metre butterfly, and 400 metre medley (on 28 July), becoming only the fourth swimmer in Olympic history to win four individual gold medals at a single Games.
