Biography

Swedish meteorologist who accompanied Umberto Nobile on the Italia Dirigible during a North Pole expedition in 1928; the ship crashed on 25 May 1928. With two other men, Malmgren was sent to reach a supply ship. All three men were forced to go without food for 45 days, and when rescuers arrived on July 12, Malmgren was missing; cannibalism on the part of the other two men was suspected.
