Biography

American military man, lawyer and politician regarded as one of the strong voices of liberalism. He practised law in New York City from 1948 to 1958 and from there worked his way up to Assistant to the Attorney General (1955-1956). He became the elected Mayor of New York City in 1965, serving from 1966 to 1973.

Serving in the military in World War II, he won five battle stars. In 1949 he married Mary Anne Harrison. They had three daughters and a son. He died on 19 December 2000 at the age of 79 of complications from pneumonia and Parkinson's disease.
