Source Notes
Sy Scholfield quotes "Jane Goodall: The Woman Who Redefined Man" by Dale Peterson (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2006), pp. 418-419: "Labor began . . . at around two o'clock in the morning of March 4. Jane reached the hospital by four o'clock, as she noted in a letter to Lyn Newman, and the baby began to reach for the light of day around 8:20. The mother had no anesthetic, and 'the first part went quickly & smoothly.' Then 'things slowed down.' The baby was supposed to have been born by 9:00 but did not finally emerge until 9:45."
