Biography
American attorney and government appointee on 31 January 1969 as Attorney General of the United States during the Richard Nixon White House years. Kleindienst earned his law degree in 1950 and practiced in Phoenix 1950-69.
With an affinity for politics, he became known as Nixon's "law and order man" while Nixon was vice-president. When the Watergate case came before the public, Kleindienst disqualified himself on 19 April 1973 and resigned two weeks later; however, he did appear at the hearings as a witness.
On 24 June 1976 he was involved in Arizona civil suit for an insurance scam, indicted on 14 felony counts of perjury. The criminal investigation took five years to reach trial, and on 22 September 1981, when Kleindienst was found Not Guilty, he burst into tears. Suspended for one year for infractions, he was reinstated on 19 July 1983. He died of lung cancer on 3 February 2000 in Prescott, AZ. He was 76.
