Biography
German genre and history painter.
He celebrated his first great success with the history painting “Death of Philip II” in 1867. In numerous monumental paintings, he glorified historical, dynastic or cultural events in German and Baden history. The five by seven meter painting “The Apotheosis of Emperor Wilhelm I” was painted in 1888, the year of the three emperors. It was acquired a year later by Emperor Wilhelm II and is now on permanent loan to the Berlin National Gallery in the Berlin Museum.
He died on 8 July 1922 in Baden Baden, Germany.
