5th Earl of Huntingdon Henry Hastings

Biography

English nobleman and literary patron known as the most important aristocratic patron of the playwrights Francis Beaumont and John Fletcher. (Hastings and Beaumont were distant cousins.) Hastings patronized other dramatists of the era as well, including John Marston.

He died on 14 November 1643, aged 56.

Sy Scholfield quotes from The Huntingdon peerage, a detailed account of the recent restoration of the earldom; to which is prefixed a history of the house of Hastings by Henry Nugent Bell (1821), p. 100: "HENRY, fifth Earl of Huntingdon, eldest son of Francis Lord Hastings, was born at Eaton, in the county of Rutland, where his baptism is entered in the parish registry in the following curious manner:-- '1586, Mr. Henry Hastings, son and heir of Mr. Francis Hastings, was born on St. Mark's even, April 24, between the hours of ten and eleven of the clock at night...'"
