Biography

Scottish case of longevity. When he died on 14 November 1998, age 108, he relinquished his title of Britain's oldest man. Born when Gladstone was P.M., Henderson started to work his own farm in 1921, beginning with 400 acres and ending up with more than 1000 acres. At his 100th birthday, he received a congratulatory telegram from the Queen, took delivery of a fleet of new tractors and finally handed over book-keeping duties to his nephew. He had married but he and his wife had no kids.

At 107 he had a pacemaker fitted but other than that, had no serious health problems other than rheumatism, which was cured in two years following the advice of an Australian doctor to take daily boiled water, Epsom salts and cattle salts, mixed in a half-pint of gin! In his latter years, he was a resident in a nursing home from where he could see some of the fields of his own land from the upper story window. Once a week he was driven on a trip around the farm in a Land Rover.
