Biography
American writer and journalist, the son of novelist Nathaniel Hawthorne and Sophia Peabody. He wrote numerous poems, novels, short stories, mystery/detective fiction, essays, travel books, biographies and histories. As a journalist he reported on the Indian Famine for Cosmopolitan magazine, and the Spanish-American War for the New York Journal. He died on July 21, 1934, aged 88, in San Francisco, California.

Sy Scholfield quotes various biographies including "Nathaniel Hawthorne" by Harold Bloom (2009), p. 29: "Writing to his sister, Louisa, Hawthorne had this to say of Julian's arrival on June 22: 'A small troglodyte made his appearance here at ten minutes to six o'clock this morning ...'"
A different time is given in "Hawthorne's Son: The Life and Literary Career of Julian Hawthorne" by Maurice Bassan (Ohio State University Press, 1970), p. 235, note 7: "Julian Hawthorne was born at one o'clock in the morning of June 22, at the home of Mrs. Hawthorne's parents, Dr. and Mrs. Peabody, 36 West Street, Boston."
