Biography

Austrian politician, and the current Head of the House of Habsburg, and the Sovereign (i.e. Grand Master) of the Order of the Golden Fleece. He is the son of Otto von Habsburg and Princess Regina of Saxe-Meiningen, and the grandson of the last Austrian emperor, Charles I. He served as a Member of the European Parliament for the Austrian People's Party 1996–1999. On 31 January 1993 in Mariazell, he married Francesca Thyssen-Bornemisza. The couple has three children. Karl and Francesca separated in 2003.

Januar 1961 notiert er in seinem Kalender, dass Karl gegen 10 Uhr zur Welt gekommen sei. Um 11.30 Uhr geht er, um Mutter und Sohn zu sehen, anschließend verfasst er zu Hause einen Artikel und »unzählige Briefe«..." (p. 272); "gegen 10 Uhr vormittags - um 11.30 Uhr erscheint der Vater, um den erstgeborenen Sohn zu sehen. Bischof Wechner tauft den Jungen am 18. Januar 1961 unter großem Presserummel in Pöcking auf den Namen »Karl Thomas Robert Maria Bahnam Franziskus«; Taufpatin ist seine Tante Adelhaid" (p. 217).

Translation: On January 11, 1961, he noted in his diary that Karl had come into the world at 10 o'clock. At 11.30 o'clock, he went to see mother and son, then he wrote an article at home and "numerous letters"... at 10 o'clock in the morning and at 11:30 the father sees his first-born son. Bishop Wechner baptizes the boy on January 18, 1961, to large media attention in Pöcking with the names 'Karl Thomas Robert Maria Bahnam Francis'; his aunt Adelhaid is godmother."
