Duchess of Aosta Hélène (1946)

Biography

French princess and a member of the deposed Orléans royal family of France by birth and, by marriage to the head of a cadet branch of the Italian royal family, the Duchess of Aosta. Although her hand in marriage was sought for the heirs to the thrones of both the United Kingdom and the Russian Empire, religious differences prevented either alliance.

Hélène was the third of eight children born to Prince Philippe, Count of Paris, and Infanta Maria Isabel of Spain.

On 25 June 1895, at Kingston upon Thames, England, Hélène married Prince Emanuele Filiberto Vittorio Eugenio Alberto Genova Giuseppe Maria, 2nd Duke of Aosta (1869–1931). He was a less eminent match than her parents had desired, but was the head of a cadet branch of the Italian royal family. The couple had two sons: Prince Amedeo, 3rd Duke of Aosta (21 October 1898 - 3 March 1942) and Prince Aimone, 4th Duke of Aosta who briefly reigned as King Tomislav II of Croatia (9 March 1900 - 29 January 1948).

Widowed in 1931, Princess Helene married for a second time in 1936 to Colonel Otto Campini (1872–1951) (born Oddone Maria Campini).

She died on 21 January 1951, aged 79, in Castellammare di Stabia, Italy.
