Biography
German composer of oratorios, operas, concertos, cantatas, anthems and sonatas. He is known universally for his "Messiah," which he wrote in 25 days. Handel is an anglisised version of his German birth name Händel.
While composing his oratorio "Jephtha," his left eye suddenly failed him on 13 February 1751, perhaps from a stroke. He had suffered a stroke in 1737 and a less severe one six years later. In August 1752, he became totally blind. On 6 April 1759, at Covent Garden, Handel conducted his "Messiah" for the last time. After the sellout audience had left, the composer collapsed and was taken to his home. At 74, he was exhausted after conducting ten concerts in the month and he knew that the end was near. He said goodbye to his friends, and on 14 April 1759, London, he died.
