Biography
French costume and fashion designer who was the creative director of Balenciaga from 1987 to 1992, after the label was relaunched following a 19-year closure.
After starting out at the House of Jeanne Lafaurie, Michel Goma worked as a stylist for Jean Patou for 10 years from 1964 to 1974, where Jean-Paul Gaultier was his assistant. He created his own fashion house in 1975.
Then, he worked for the Japanese store Isetan (wedding dresses, glasses, luggage, and even cars). He also designed Carven's ready-to-wear collections before returning to create a ready-to-wear line at Balenciaga in 1987 called "Le Dix" in homage to the perfume initiated by Cristóbal Balenciaga in 1947; he remained there until 1992.
He designed the costumes for the play Au théâtre ce soir by Yves Jamiaque.
Michel Goma died on 18 April 2022 at age 90.
