Biography
German-Swiss mountaineer whose ascent of the western summit of Sia Kangri (7315 m 24,370 ft) in 1934 set the women's world altitude record, which stood for 20 years. Her ascent occurred while she was a member of the International Himalaya Expedition, led by her husband, Swiss-German Günther Dyhrenfurth. This expedition was the first to climb Sia Kangri.
She divorced Günter Dyhrenfurth in 1936, and the same year was awarded the Olympic Mountaineering Prize (Prix olympique d'alpinisme) at the Summer Games in Berlin.
She had three children, including Norman Dyhrenfurth, the mountaineer and filmmaker who led the successful American Mount Everest Expedition of 1963, which placed six climbers on the summit.
Hettie Dyhrenfurth died on 28 October 1972 in Orange, California, aged 79.
