Biography

American film actress, pop singer and philanthropist, the only child of stand-up comedian Lenny Bruce and his wife Honey, a stripper from Manila, Arkansas. Kitty Bruce is the founder and CEO of The Lenny Bruce Memorial Foundation 501(C)3 Non For Profit Charity which helps those in early recovery from alcohol and drug addiction.

Her parents Honey and Lenny had a tumultuous relationship. Many serious domestic incidents occurred between them, usually the result of serious drug use. They broke up and reunited over and over again between 1956 and Lenny's death in 1966, the first ten years of Kitty's life. Her parents first separated in March 1956, and were back together by July of that year when they travelled to Honolulu for a nightclub tour. During the trip, Honey was arrested for marijuana possession. Prevented from leaving the island due to her parole conditions, Lenny took the opportunity to leave her again, this time kidnapping the then one-year-old Kitty. In her autobiography, Honey claims Lenny turned her in to the police. Honey was later sentenced to two years in federal prison. Kitty's parents divorced on 21 January 1957, then fought a custody battle over her. In 1959, their divorce was finalized.

Throughout the final decade of his life, Lenny Bruce was beset by severe drug addiction, using heroin, methamphetamine and Dilaudid daily, suffering numerous health problems and personal strife as a result. His death was caused by an overdose on 3 August 1966 at age 40. At the time of his death, his girlfriend and fiancee was comedienne Lotus Weinstock.

Honey Bruce married Jeffrey Friedman in 1984, and they remained married and lived in Hawaii until her death. She had legally changed her name to Honey Bruce Friedman. She died from complications of colitis at age 78 on 12 September 2005 in Honolulu.
