She married Phelan Beale in 1917 and had three children, two sons and, her eldest child, a daughter also named Edith Bouvier Beale. They separated in 1931 and Edie retained their mansion called "Grey Gardens" in the Hamptons on Long Island, NY. "Big Edie" died February 5, 1977.

Shelley Ackerman quotes Lois Wright who lived with the Beales for a year and wrote "My Life at Grey Gardens: 13 Months and Beyond." Other dates of birth appear in genealogical records including October 5, 1894. PT has found the following: On one census (1900), she is listed as being born in May 1895 (no day given) with parents being Maud and John living in Franklin, Essex County, NJ. In the 1910 census, she is simply listed as being 15. Someone did a family tree giving her a birth date of October 5, 1894 (no sources) and the social security death index gives this date as well. A ship’s passenger list gives her birth date as Oct 5, 1895 and her hubbie Phelan’s as May 23, 1881. Yet another passenger list on another ship gives her date as October 9, 1895 or 1896 (hard to read but looks like 1895). IMDB gives 1896. The NY Times obituary said she was 81 when she died in Feb 77 so that would give 1895.
