Biography
German lawyer and writer who earned particular merit through his work Elementa juris civilis Justinianei; cum Codice Napoleoneo et reliquis legum codicihus collata (Strasbourg and Paris, 1812).
His lyric poems rise above the ordinary, but he achieved the best reception with his comedy Der Pfingstmontag (Le lundi de la Pentecote), in the Strasbourg dialect (Strasbourg, 1816; 2nd edition with illustrations and, increasingly, with a selection of poems and biography, 1850), a work which according to Goethe's judgment has few equals in terms of clarity and completeness of vision and ingenious presentation of details.
He became professor of civil law at the University of Koblenz in April 1806 by imperial decree. In 1809, he got a chair for history at the University of Strasbourg and in 1811 he became professor for Roman law at the same university.
On 18 February 1829, his 49th birthday, Johann Georg Daniel Arnold died of a stroke in Strasbourg.
