Biography
Spanish politician, who was elected to Prime Minister in the election of March 14, 2004, three days after bomb blasts killed over 140 people and injured more than 1400 at rush hour in Madrid. A leader of the Socialist Party, he vowed that Spain would pull its troops out of Iraq. Although his predecessor supported the Iraq War led by US President George W. Bush and England's Prime Minister Tony Blair, Zapato condemned the initiative by saying: "Mr Blair and Mr Bush must do some reflection and self-criticism... One cannot bomb a people by chance, one cannot lead a war with lies, one cannot accept that."
The media commented that Zapatero may have been the first prime minister elected by the efforts of Osama Bin Laden.
Zapatero joined the Socialist Party (PSOE) as a teenager in 1979. In 1986, he became the youngest person to become MP in Spain.
