American actress, most noted for her role as the female lead in "King Kong."

Wray got her breakthrough role in films in the 1928 silent movie, "The Wedding March" and became a busy leading lady. In 1933, the year of "King Kong" she made a total of 11 films. Her career peaked in the 1930s and in 1942, she quit working to be a wife and mother. Her first husband was John Monk Saunders, a screenwriter. They had a daughter Susan. After she divorced Saunders, she married Robert Riskin, another writer, who suffered a stroke in 1950. He never recovered and died five years later. Their marriage yielded two more children. Sixteen years after his death, she married his physician, Sandford Rothenberg.

Wray went back to work in 1953, appearing mostly in motherly roles, but "King Kong" remains her most noted role, a role she sometimes resented being identified with.

Born in rural Canada, she moved to the US with her family when she was 3. She wanted to be an actress from the time she was young. She published her autobiography "On the Other Hand" in 1988.

She died on August 8, 2004 in Manhattan, NY, just a month before her 97th birthday. A friend said she just "drifted off quietly as if she was going to sleep."
