German writer and Protestant pastor descended from the Schorndorf branch of Württemberg's noted Weitbrecht family.

From an early age he wrote local histories, folk stories, song lyrics, short stories, and poems. He often worked with his brother, the literary historian Carl Weitbrecht, and other regional poets of the time. His special interest was the editing and re-writing of previously known stories or the writing of treatises on these texts.

Richard Weitbrecht had six children from two marriages. He died on 1 May 1911 in Heidelberg at age 60.
