Karl Weierstrass


German mathematician who is often cited as the "father of modern analysis".

Weierstrass made significant advancements in the soundness of calculus and also in the field of calculus of variations.

He died on 19 February 1897 in Berlin.

Sy Scholfield quotes Reinhard Bölling's book, "Das Fotoalbum für Weierstrass" (Vieweg Verlag, 1994), p. 3: "He adds with a wink, 'In addition, I don't even know when my birthday is; I was born around midnight, in the night from the 31st October to the 1st November.' ... according to the entry in the parish register, Karl Weierstrass was born on the 31st October 1815 in Ostenfelde, in the district of Warendorf, under the administration of Münster."
