Booker T. Washington


American educator who, although born into slavery, went on to become one of the great educational leaders. He worked his entire life trying to improve the life of the Negro and organized the Tuskegee Institute, a school for blacks in Alabama. In addition, he served as the institute's president from 1881-1915.
