Italian theologian of the Reformation period who converted from Roman Catholicism to Protestantism. He was a very influential figure in the early development of Reformed theology and in the English Reformation. He lived his final days teaching theology in Zurich where he died on 12 November 1562.

McNair (Clarendon, 1967), p. 53: "At nine o'clock on the evening of Sunday, the 8th of September 1499, whilst Florence celebrated the nativity of the Blessed Virgin, a son was born to Stefano and Maria Vermigli, and they named him Peter Martyr."
