French paleontologist and archaeologist, whose work contributed greatly to the field of stratigraphy of which he was considered one of the great names. In paleontology, he discovered and described many new species. In 1882, with the help of his cousin Léon Carez, he renovated and updated the geological map of France, published in 1885. He died on 9 October 1915, aged 60, in Bach.
