Martin Van Buren

American politician who served as the President of the U.S. from 1837-1841, during the first great depression and the Panic of 1837. Van Buren was the first American president to be born on U.S. soil: he was not popular and often called crafty. When he ran for the presidential nomination, he was defeated three times.

Passing the bar in 1803, he served as a State Senator 1813-1815 and Attorney General of N.Y. 1815-1819. He was Secretary of State under Jackson and elected Vice-President in 1833.

Van Buren married Hannah Hoes on 21 February 1807 and they had four sons. He was widowed on 5 February 1819.

Died of asthma on 24 July 1862.
