J. M. W. Turner

Biography

British artist, landscape painter and etcher, noted for his work with luminous light. He exhibited successfully from 1790, but later in his life became a wealthy miser, slovenly, solitary and secretive.

Turner was elected an associate of the academy in 1799 and full membership three years later. In 1807 he became a professor at the Royal Academy and in 1845, he was appointed deputy president. When he died, 12/19/1851 in Chelsea, he left his money to charity. He is said to have uttered the last words "The sun is God."

Adams' One Hundred Horoscopes.

Sy Scholfield quotes "The Life of J.M.W. Turner: Founded on Letters and Papers Furnished by His Friends and Fellow Academicians, Volume 1" by Walter Thornbury (Hurst and Blackett, 1862), p. 250: "Turner was born exactly at the right moment. The planets were in due conjunction over his house of life. Illustrated books began to be popular just as Turner's talent began to be known." This may just make for a good story, but taken at face value: the house of life in astrology is the first house and a chart cast for around dawn puts 4 planets in the first house. There is no record of Turner's birth date (he was baptised on 14 May 1775) but he stated he was born on 23 April, Saint George's Day.
