German-American-Jewish internist honoured today by the German Society for Digestive and Metabolic Diseases which awards the annual Thannhauser Prize (endowed with 10,000 euros as of 2011).

After completing his medical studies, he habilitated in 1917 at the University of Munich and became an expert in metabolic diseases. In 1930 he took over the management of the Medical Clinic of the Albert-Ludwigs-University Freiburg.

In 1933 he was humiliated by the hospital director who demoted his position to a scientific assistant at the Heidelberg University Hospital. He managed to emigrate to the USA and rebuild his life in Boston. Here he described in 1941, together with the also emigrated Alfred Hauptmann, for the first time an autosomal dominant hereditary myopathy, which is today referred to as Hauptmann-Thannhauser muscular dystrophy.

He died on 18 December 1962 in Boston, aged 77.
