Biography

British professional photographer. In 1868, he set up his own photographic business in Oxford. Henry Taunt's black-and-white photographs are mainly views of Oxford, Oxfordshire (together with surrounding counties) and the River Thames. He produced the first pocket guide to the River Thames to be illustrated with photographs. Taunt's photographs are reproduced in many books and form a useful historical record of social history and architecture. Major collections of his work are held by English Heritage: 14,000 images, Oxfordshire County Council: Oxfordshire Studies and the River and Rowing Museum at Henley. He died on 4 November 1922.

Sy Scholfield quotes "Henry Taunt of Oxford: a Victorian photographer" by Malcolm Graham (Oxford Illustrated Press, 1973), p. 1883: "During an evening thunderstorm on 14 June 1842, and while Great Tom was sounding the curfew, Henry William Taunt was born in Oxford at Penson's Gardens, St, Ebbe's." Similar data in "The England of Henry Taunt, Victorian Photographer" by Bryan Brown (1973), p. ix: "Taunt was born on the evening of 14 June 1842 ..."

According to "The Antient and Present State of the City of Oxford" by Anthony Wood and John Peshall (Rivington, 1773), p. 177 "[According to] The custom of ringing the bell at Carfax every night at eight o'clock (called Curfew Bell, or Cover-fire Bell), . . . the bell . . . constantly rings at eight, as Great Tom tolls at nine." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curfew_bell [note 5].
