Biography
Archduke of Austria, a member of the House of Habsburg-Lorraine, and the Palatine of Hungary from 1847 to 1848.
He was the son of Archduke Joseph, Palatine of Hungary and Hermine of Anhalt-Bernburg-Schaumburg-Hoym. His mother died shortly after giving birth to him and his twin sister, Archduchess Hermine of Austria. He was brought up by his stepmother, Maria Dorothea of Württemberg.
He gained the rank of Lieutenant Field Marshal in the service of the Austrian Army. In 1841 he travelled through the different countries of the monarchy, the Kingdom of Bohemia, the Kingdom of Lombardy–Venetia, the Tyrol, the Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia, the Papal States, Modena and Tuscany. In 1843 Emperor Ferdinand I of Austria appointed him governor of Bohemia. He stayed in that capacity until, in January 1847, his father died and he inherited the title of Count Palatine of Hungary, from 12 November 1847 to 26 September 1848.
He was the last of the Counts Palatine, as he died on 19 February 1867, aged 49, unmarried and without heirs.

(Translation: at Buda(pest) ... The Archduchess Hermione, the most conscientious wife of his Majesty, Archduke Valatinus, was not expecting to give birth until October, but in the night of the 13th-14th of this month, her convulsions began.... On the 14th, after eleven o'clock in the morning, Dr. Birlo felt himself compelled to look at the child with his instruments, which proved successful. An Archduchess was given life. But there was a second child. The Archduchess became somewhat calmer, but it did not take long for the convulsions to recur with renewed force. At about 1 o'clock the second child, an Archduke, was delivered with the instruments, and this operation was also carried out in a happy manner, but all the means employed, and the convulsions of the Archduchess, had been in vain. The Archduchess surrendered to the spirit at half-before-two o'clock [1:30] in the afternoon).
