Biography

Flemish ophthalmologist, professor at the University of Ghent and political activist in the Flemish Movement.

He died in Aalst, Belgium, on 29 April 1951.

Sy Scholfield quotes from "Professor Speleers: een biografie" by Joris Dedeurwaerder (Academia Press, 2002), p. 7: "Het ligt voor de hand dat de geboorte van weer een jongen - " Raymond " - op 9 maart 1876, om zes uur 's ochtends, niet eens een jaar na de dood van het eerste zoontje, in het gezin Speleers een blijde gebeurtenis is geweest. Die zelfde dag deed de 38-jarige vader om elf uur aangifte van de geboorte."

Translation: 'Obviously the birth of another boy - "Raymond" - on 9 March 1876 at six o'clock in the morning, not even a year after the death of the first son in the Speleers family, was a joyous event. That same day the 38-year-old father registered the birth at eleven o'clock.'
