Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso

Portuguese modernist and cubist painter. Son of wealthy landowners, on 14 November 1906 he departed to Paris, where he lived, studied painting and worked for some years. He was friends with Amedeo Modigliani, Sonia and Robert Delaunay, Apollinaire, Picabia, Chagall among others. He was back to Portugal in the summer of 1914 (because of World War I) and married Lucie Meynardi Pecetto. He died untimely, aged 30, a victim of the Spanish flu, at the height of his creative powers.
