French cabinetmaker convicted of the rape and murder of an eleven-year-old girl, Marthe Erbelding, killed on 31 January 1907. The case gave rise to a veritable journalistic soap opera occupying the headlines at the beginning of the month of February 1907.
Sentenced to death on 23 July 1907, Soleilland was pardoned by the President of the Republic Armand Fallières, an abolitionist. The death penalty being automatically commuted to hard labour for life in case of a pardon, he was sent to prison on Île Royale, where he ended his life in May 1920.
