Biography
American suspect in a high-profile murder case, the 10/30/1985 beating death of 15-year-old Martha Moxley, a childhood friend. The teenager had been savagely killed with the iron end of a golf club, struck in the head with such frenzy that the club had shattered. She had then been stabbed repeatedly with the jagged shaft of the club. The girl had been last seen alive outside the home of Thomas and Michael Skakel, ages 17 and 15. The investigation originally focused on the boys and on Ken Littleton, 23, a live-in tutor for the Skakel family of seven kids, who was on his first day of the job. Rushton Skakel (the brother of Ethel Skake Kennedy) had been widowed two years prior and kept help in the house for the kids. The Skakel family fortune came from a company originally called Great Lakes Coal & Coke Co., founded by Michael's grandfather, George Skakel. It was once one of the largest privately owned manufacturing companies in the United States. They were all at home that Halloween night when Martha disappeared; her body was found the next day.
Both Skakel brothers changed their stories about their whereabouts that night in statements to private investigators hired by the family to clear their names. In the ensuing years, Thomas had married, had a family and was living in Stockbridge. Michael had moved often. According to a 1998 book on the Moxley case by former Los Angeles police Det. Mark Fuhrman, for nearly a decade Michael was in and out of schools for troubled youths and later adult treatment facilities. From 1978 to 1980 he was at the Elan School in Poland Spring, Maine, where he reportedly made admissions that implicated him in Moxley's death. Dominick Dunne published a best-selling novel, "A Season in Purgatory" in which he patterned his characters on the Kennedy clan.
Years later, on 1/19/2000, Michael Skakel, 39, was charged with the murder of Martha Moxley in spite of thin physical evidence. He was tried and sentenced to 20 years in prison.
