Philip Sidney

Biography

British courier, traveler, poet, patron, soldier and Governor of Flushing in the Netherlands. He was the embodiment of "the complete gentleman" in the classic sense, remembered for his sonnets and romances.

Born into the advantages of upper-class England, he was educated at Christ Church in Oxford and traveled extensively with his father and uncle, Robert Dudley, the Earl of Leicester. Queen Elizabeth sent him on a royal mission to Germany in 1577, the first of many such assignments. Exiled from the Queen and her court because of his letter written against her possible marriage, he devoted himself to writing, 1578-1583. With the first of his important Elizabethan sonnet sequences, he regained the Queen's favor and was knighted in 1583.

Sidney married Frances Walshingham in 1583 and Queen Elizabeth stood as godmother to their only child, daughter Elizabeth, born in 1585.

Appointed the Governor of Flushing in 1585, he then became general of the Cavalry and sent to assist the Dutch in the war against Spain. At the battle of Zutphen, he was wounded on 22 September 1586, and died on 17 October 1586 in Arnheim. All his works were published posthumously.

Source Notes

Modern Astrology 5/1917 quotes family archives (November 30, 1554 OS, 4:45 AM LAT).

Sy Scholfield cites same data from an entry in the Sidney family psalter (bible) quoted in "Philip Sidney: A Double Life" by Alan Stewart (Random House, 2001), p. 9: 'The nativity of Philip Sidney . . . was on Friday the last of November, being Saint Andrew's Day, a quarter before five in the morning. . . anno domini Milessimo, Quingentessimo, Quinquagessimo quarto.'"

In January 2021, Fokkelien von Meyenfeldt pointed out that the birth place was wrong. This has been corrected.

She also sent a chart drawn "by mathematician and astrologer Thomas Allen, see image at right. He was a well known scientist at Oxford University at the time Sidney studied there. Also he served Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, as an astrologer. The chart was made in 1570 or 1571."

data out of chart

That chart gives date 29 Nov 1554, time 19:58. This is apparently astronomical time notation. Astronomers used to begin the day at noon with 24 hours, so that 19:58 corresponds to 7:58 am on 30 November. Whether the time is in LAT or LMT is not clear. We achieve the best fit to this chart with a birth time of 7:54 LAT or 7:47 LMT. The chart uses Campanus houses.
