American shooting at a college campus, the then deadliest shooting incident by a single gunman in U.S. history, leaving 33 people dead, including the gunman, and several others wounded. The gunman seemed to be shooting randomly on the campus as shots were reported from opposite sides of the 2,600-acre campus. The first shots were fired on the fourth floor of West Ambler Johnston, a co-ed residence hall, where two people were killed. The gunman then crossed campus, arriving at Norris Hall classrooms, and continued to shoot, seemingly randomly, with his own suicide occurring about two hours after he began his rampage.

The shooter, Cho Seung-Hui, was born in South Korea on 18 January 1984. He was a legal resident of the US, having arrived with his family when he was 8 years old. Cho grew up in a Virginia town outside Washington, DC, where his family owns a dry-cleaning business. He graduated from Westfield High in nearby Chantilly in 2003; his older sister graduated from Princeton in 2004.

Cho kept to himself on campus, barely talking to anyone else. Withdrawn and isolated he left a note railing against what he saw as moral decay among the privileged at school. He had previously produced writings that indicated some level of disturbance or even mental illness, and that contained "veiled threats," and a professor had referred him to counseling. Some of his plays and poetry were called "intimidating," "violent" and "profane." Officials found prescription medicine used to treat mental illness among his effects. He had recently purchased handguns and a semi-automatic.
