Orthodox Rabbi, and the founder and first Rebbe of Chabad, a branch of Hasidic Judaism, then based in Liadi, Imperial Russia. He was the author of many works, and is best known for Shulchan Aruch HaRav, Tanya and his Siddur Torah Or.
He was prodigy, mystic, a communal activist, a philosopher, a halachic authority, a composer, a talmudist . But he was primarily a spiritual guide, who created a practical path that allows anyone to approach divinity. Rabbi Schneur Zalman lived in an era of change and unrest on a global scale. Yet his life continues to inspire, and his works and teachings have long withstood the test of time.
