Canadian-American live theater, film and TV actress whose work is highly praised. Her films include "Desert Hearts," "In Praise of Older Women" and "The Color of Money," 1986.

Called a workaholic and a sexual pioneer, she went through two marriages and eclectic affairs; she has no problem with screen nudity. Shaver put a halt to a drug and booze addiction in 1981.

In September 2001 she began working in the TV series debut of "The Education of Max Bickford," playing a transsexual M-to-F schoolteacher.
